Umuahia, Abia State – President Bola Tinubu has called on the political class in the South-East to emulate the legacy of inclusiveness and visionary leadership exemplified by the late Dr. Michael Okpara, Premier of the defunct Eastern Region.

The President gave the charge on Friday while inaugurating the newly renovated and retrofitted Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia.

Represented by the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, Tinubu described Okpara as a statesman who positioned the South-East at the centre of national politics through constructive engagement and inclusive governance.

“Dr. Okpara played to the centre and created a place for the South-East in the business of nation building,” he said.

The President commended the Abia State Government for transforming the abandoned structure into a modern landmark befitting the memory of the late Premier. He further reiterated his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, nation building, and equitable socioeconomic development across the country.

Tinubu explained that his visit to Abia was part of a broader mission to inaugurate key projects that will enhance the well-being of residents.

“Some are federal projects performed by the Governor; others are state projects. But projects, whether they are federal or state, the important thing is to touch the lives of the people,” he said.

In his remarks, Governor Alex Otti recalled that the auditorium had been neglected for years until his administration began its renovation in late 2023.

“Today, it is a standing edifice worthy of beholding. By the time we make a step inside, Your Excellency, you will be happy with the quality of work that is done,” Otti said.

The event highlighted both the symbolic and practical importance of inclusive politics and infrastructural renewal in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic and development agenda.
